Should you wear a veil on your wedding day

At a recent engagement shoot, one of our brides and I got to chatting about whether or not she was going to wear a veil on her wedding day! When she asked our opinion about whether she should wear a veil, we realized that I believed there are LOTS of benefits to wearing a veil on your wedding day, and we want to share them with you guys today!

Traditionally, brides have almost always worn veils… but in recent years, we’ve definitely seen more brides opt to not wear one on their wedding days! And just with so many things on wedding days, it’s a totally personal decision. However, I think there a lot of reasons that wearing a veil on your wedding day CAN make your photos that much better! Here’s why!

DETAILS

Veils make an incredible backdrop for your detail shots on your wedding day! It’s one of our very favorite details to incorporate… especially if the veil has a lot of gorgeous detailing, like lace or other beautiful textures! We try to create setups for our brides’ detail shots that really incorporate the entire theme of their wedding day, and one of the best ways to do this is to use the veil!!

PORTRAITS

You’ve probably seen those gorgeous, close-up shots online with a veil pulled over couples’ faces… doesn’t every bride want a shot like that?! It’s one of our absolute favorites to capture, and it is such a romantic, soft, precious celebrating the sweetest moment. These photos wouldn’t be possible without a veil, of course! ???? Veils are one of those elements you often might not even notice when looking at a wedding photo- but it’s often the very thing that makes an image so beautiful. Throughout this post, we’ve shared a few of our absolute favorite portraits incorporating veils… did we convince you to wear one yet?!

VARIETY

If our couple chooses to do a first look, one of the ways a bride can still keep some of that surprise factor for the ceremony is to WAIT to put on the veil until just before the ceremony! This moment is already special in the first place, but a girl REALLY looks like a bride when she wears her veil for the first time! Waiting to wear the veil until the ceremony also allows for variety during portraits, since the portraits immediately before the first look would be without the veil and the married portraits immediately after the ceremony would include it!

LEGACY

One of the biggest reasons we love our job is because of the legacy our job brings us into! The photos we capture at engagement sessions will one day be shown to our couples’ kids and grandkids, and through those photos, kids and grandkids will get a chance to see their parents or grandparents in the “young love” stage, which I just LOVE. Portraits of brides will be passed down to granddaughters, photos of our couples together will be framed in homes, and detail shots will be put in albums to showcase the vision of our couples’ days. It’s such an honor to be a small part of that legacy! A veil can also be an incredible way to introduce legacy into your wedding day. A lot of our brides will wear their mothers’ or grandmothers’ veils, or have them altered to fit their wedding gown! Other brides choose to pass their veils daughters to their daughters and granddaughters one day, too, and we love this idea!
