THE PRODUCTS YOU USE MATTER.
As many of you know, we are expecting our first little one in April! We could not be more excited or thankful!! We struggled for around two and a half years to get pregnant, and the journey was not easy. There are a LOT of things we believe led to me finally getting pregnant with baby Grayson Henry, and I’ve become so passionate about sharing what we learned on our journey in order to help so many other families who are struggling to start or grow their families! 🙂
One of the things we personally chose to do when we were TTC was to take a hard look at all the personal and household products we used! After looking up all my makeup, skincare, cosmetics, cleaning products, and other household products on the EWG website, I was stunned by what I read. I realized our products had negative impacts like cancer, reproductive harm, organ system toxicity, hormone disruption {which ended up being the #1 reason it took us so long to get pregnant!}, and more. I knew we needed to make a change!
MAKING THE SWITCH
I’m more than happy to share another time about all the products I ultimately chose for our family to use after SO much time and research, but today I want to answer one of our most commonly asked questions- what did I switch to for skincare, and do I still use all those products now that I’m pregnant?
The answer to those questions is Beautycounter and heck yes! One of the biggest benefits of changing all your products while TTC is the fact that once you become pregnant, you most likely will not have to switch much in order to use safe products during your pregnancy. It’s been so convenient!
I found Beautycounter back in 2019, was blown away by the safety of their ingredients, products & packaging, and one weekend, I went for it: I placed a bulk order for #allthethings, and I’ve never looked back! I threw away everything horrible I’d been using, and the best part is that I actually like these products way better than the toxic drugstore products I was using before!
One more note: your makeup game is only as strong as the health of the skin you’re applying that makeup to! Before Beautycounter, I used makeup to try to cover up my skin, and all I did was wash my face with a drugstore cleanser. I couldn’t use any moisturizers because they’d make my face break out, so my skin was dry and I struggled with blemishes. Now, I take care of my skin so that it shines through my makeup- BIG difference! I want to look like me, just a little more sparkly! 😉
BEFORE DIVING IN…
I am someone who considers skincare to be self care! I look forward to my 5 minute morning skincare routine and my 10 minute evening skincare routine. They are relaxing to me, and I notice a difference if I skip a day! I do the same thing almost every single morning and evening, with the exception of a few products that I apply in the evenings a few times per week or maybe once on the weekend.
The last thing I want to share before diving in is how CRAZY long Beautycounter’s products last! One bottle of anything from Beautycounter should last you months upon months. The products are so concentrated that you only need the tiniest bit to do the job! Although the initial cost of a high quality product is higher, it is beyond worth it for how long it lasts!
A few other things I do to take good care of my skin include sleeping on a satin pillowcase, drinking tons of water, and using a jade roller after my morning skin care routine and my evening skin care routine!
Let’s dive in! I’m sharing the products I use, in the order I use them. 🙂 All in all, my morning routine takes about 5 minutes and my evening routine takes about 10 minutes!
MY GO-TO PRODUCTS
1. Evening: Remove Makeup: Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm and Instant Eye Makeup Remover
First things first, I take off my makeup! The Lotus Cleansing Balm is one of my all time favorite products because it nourishes your skin as it takes your makeup off. You can even sleep in a light layer of it as an overnight mask- it’s that good! I also love how long a jar of the balm lasts.
2. Morning & Evening: Clear Pore Cleanser
Just like how you should be washing your hair twice in the shower, be sure to double cleanse your face in the evening, too! My skin tends to struggle with the occasional blemish {especially due to hormones!}, so the Clear Pore Cleanser is my go-to. I will never use anything else- it has helped those blemishes SO much! I cleanse twice in the evening and once in the morning, and I love that it gently exfoliates as it cleanses.
3. Evening: Instant Matte Toner
This may be the most underrated step in your skincare routine! Even if you double cleanse your face, you would be shocked at how much junk can still be on your face. I still struggled with blemishes until I started using a toner after cleansing- it deep cleans your pores and gets all that leftover makeup out! I use a cotton ball and just apply toner all over my face very gently.
4. Morning & Evening: Mineral Boost Hydrating Essence
If you’re over 20, you need to be using some anti-aging products- it’s just a fact! 🙂 I’ve noticed a huge difference since starting to use Beautycounter’s anti-aging line, Countertime, and I’m slowly introducing products as I run out of others. This essence is designed to be applied before any other skincare, and it moisturizes & hydrates skin for a radiant look! It also balances your skin and preps it for whatever else you’ll apply next. This is my favorite product and I LOVE how it smells!
5. Morning & Evening: Eye Rescue Cream or Ultra Renewal Eye Cream
The fact that I didn’t start using an eye cream until last year is crazy to me! In photos, my under-eyes literally look better now in my mid-twenties than they did when I was in college. Since using an eye cream, I find I need less under-eye concealer, too! Our Eye Revive Cooling Masks are also a fun treat.
6. Morning & Evening: Intense Moisture Serum, All Bright C Serum, and/or Tripeptide Radiance Serum
The first skincare product I got hooked on with Beautycounter was our Intense Moisture Serum. I literally can NOT run out of this because my skin just needs the moisture so badly! My makeup also goes on far better when I use it. When I first tried the samples back in 2019, Luke wouldn’t stop telling me how pretty my skin looked and how much it glowed! 🙂 Depending on what my skin needs, I typically apply the Intense Moisture Serum in both the morning and evening and sometimes will layer our All Bright Serum over it in the morning {for some extra glow}, and I’ll layer the Radiance Serum over it in the evening {for the anti-aging benefits}. Every serum does something different, so I just pay attention to what my skin needs! For that reason, my serums last me FOREVER.
7. Morning & Evening Moisturizer: Matte Effect Gel Cream
I noticed a huge difference in my skin when I introduced this particular moisturizer- I’m convinced it keeps any oil from causing blemishes. It’s lightweight and I adore it!
8. Morning & Evening: No. 1 Brightening Facial Oil
Oils are vitamins for your skin! Morning and evening, I apply our brightening oil to my entire face, focusing especially on any areas of redness or darkness I want to target. Our No. 3 Balancing Oil is also phenomenal during breakouts!
Every few nights: Overnight Resurfacing Peel
Several nights per week, I’ll apply this after eye cream and before any serums! This invisible peel singlehandedly changed my skin, and I LOVE how my skin looks and feels in the morning after I have used this!
Twice per week: Charcoal Facial Mask
About twice per week {if I’m on top of things!}, I love to use this mask before bed! I typically will wash and tone my face, let the mask sit, and then wash it off after about ten minutes and finish my normal nighttime skincare routine. I find that it really helps balance out my skin with hormones, as well as gently exfoliate it! If I have a blemish, I will sleep with a tiny bit of this mask on the blemish, and I’ve found that it helps a ton.
For Blemishes: SOS Acne Spot Treatment
Whenever I notice a little blemish, I apply the tiniest bit of this at night, and before I know it, the blemish is totally gone! I find that it works very fast.
If you’re looking for the best and most economical way to get started with safer skincare, here are my top recommendations:
- Start with what you NEED to use daily, which is typically your face wash! Making that switch first will really start you on your way to safer products! Your skin absorbs WHATEVER you put on it, so make sure it’s something safe!
- Grab a set! The easiest way to save money on your skincare is to buy it in a bundle, because then each product is discounted.
